Une review de cette compilation sur le webzine consacré au metal extreme "La horde noire":

"Depuis quelques temps, la scène doom et affiliés dans toutes ses variantes semble être en plein essor et se renouveler. Et comme toujours, c'est dans l'underground qu'on peut découvrir les nouvelles tendances, celles d'aujourd'hui comme celles de demain. La scène doom au sens large du terme fourmille donc actuellement de nouvelles formations créatives que PARADISE NOISE RECORDS fait immerger de l'inconnu avec cette compilation CD-R présenté dans un boitier A5, qui élargit ainsi son rôle initial de promoteurs et distributeurs en France de certains des groupes qui figurent sur cette compilation. Il s'agit ici d'une compilation principalement de doom metal au sens initial de lent et lourd, style de départ commun aux différentes formations sur lequel se greffe différentes variations ainsi que des styles limitrophes au doom. Mais ce que nous montre cette compilation, c'est qu'après l'essor du doom / death atmosphérique il y a dix ans, puis du gothic doom, puis de l'actuel Funeral doom, le style initial, lent et lourd, semble vouloir donner encore de nouvelles choses, peut-être ailleurs que dans le registre tragique, mais tout aussi créatif comme le montrent les douze formations proposées sur cette compilation pour un total de 72 minutes.

OCEAN, nous vient des Etats-Unis et propose, comme il se doit, une musique lente et lourde marqué par des réminiscences à la CATHEDRAL, et une orientation vers le "Sludge", ce style né d'une rencontre entre le doom et le hardcore, notamment dans la voix core. Des mêmes terres, CENTRIFUGE propose quant à lui un doom plus stoner, plus groove avec une voix claire, qui se met parfois à crier. SIRAFEX, du Royaume-Uni, poursuit plus loin dans le stoner, avec un son très urbain et une voix qui rappelle étrangement CARCASS. Quant à ELECTRIC PRESS KIT, il nous rappelle les liens qui ont toujours existé entre la scène doom et la scène gothic puisqu'il s'agit là de gothic rock / batcave avec toutefois un son plus crade, une voix goth trafiquée, et comme le veut le style, une basse bien en avant, et un accent mis sur les sons dissonants; leurs compatriotes français de CORPUS DELICTI ont probablement été une influence. PLUTONIUM vient, quant à lui, de Suède et oeuvre plutôt dans un black metal avec un son un peu à la ENSLAVED et une touche d'industriel, avec un morceau telle une marche. Un côté indus qui favorise la transition immédiate sans pause (?!?) avec LIFE'S DECAY de France, qui propose une musique dark indus très malsaine, rituelle et rythmée, telle une procession, rappelant un peu DE VERMIS MYSTERIIS (le groupe d'indus), MORDOR et d'autres, un titre vraiment excellent, l'un des meilleurs. PARTNERS IN CRIME, nous vient également de France, et est défini comme du sludgecore, je n'ai pas trop accroché ce hardcore lent et expérimental, avec des réminiscences du "Bleach" de Nirvana. HORION nous vient également de France et officie dans la musique electronique avec beaucoup de percussions. EQUILIBRIUM, qui a déjà réalisé plusieurs split albums, propose ici un titre instrumental sous forme de black lent avec des percussions indus. SOY BOMB des Usa est du pur doom lent, sans voix, confirmant la tendance à l'inspiration dans l'underground américain depuis quelques années, tout comme PHILISTINE avec son doom metal industriel avec voix core et percussions indus, et influences de Godflesh. Ce premier volume s'achève avec une formation allemande à l'étrange patronyme de VERSUS THE STILLBORN-MINDED, qui propose du true doom metal avec une voix rappelant Darren White d'Anathema / The Blood Divine.

Une compilation très intéressante au final plutôt axée doom au sens large, avec les styles limitrophes et dérivés proposant des formations affiliée au doom avec une approche, pour la plupart, différente à tous les niveaux, et qui pour certaines devraient faire parler d'elles par la suite.

Drowing Into Sorrow (Paradise Noise Records)

This work is a really great compendium of the most dense, sick, crawling music over this miserable world… it consist in twelve tracks of twelve different bands that ranges from the ultra crawling Doom Metal, powerful Stoner Doom, emotionless Drone to Electric Industrial Noise… OCEAN opens this compilation with “Monument” a 14 minutes piece of crawling Doom Metal, with bleak and suffocating atmospheres of apathetic heaviness, the music of Ocean moves at mid to slow paced velocities, adorned by ultra low and slow semi-saturated riffing… The vocal work is really good; its mid toned rabid growls are a remarkable point. Despite of the song long duration, the music flows with some unusual variety, but obviously completely inside the traditional Doom Metal parameters. CENTRIFUGE continues with the second track “Ethanol”, this song is a dense piece of Stoner Doom Rock/Metal, with thick atmospheres created by Sabbatical riffs and strong bass lines, the vocals here are predominately clean with some quite raspy passages, this isn’t a bad song at all, but at least for me, sounds quite uninspired in comparison with the big amount of similar-styled bands. Then SYRAFEX comes with “Poisoned Dwarf”, an intense and heavy piece of Sludge/Doom Metal, with grim vocals and mid tempo riffing, the music of Syrafex is really insane and powerful, with chaotic atmospheres of anger and depression that will revolt your intestines… the only negative point of this excellent track is the low-fi sound quality, which, probably doesn’t sounds bad at all in a completely equally produced album, but in a compilation, puts the band in disadvantage. ELECTRIC PRESS KIT continues with “Bullet In My Head”, a hardcore sounding piece of Sludge, with quite interesting groovy riffs, an apathetic vocal work and some 80’s Gothic Rock sounding atmosphere…just that… nothing else, but nothing less either. The following track belong to PLUTONIUM, “Introducing The Dominacee” is a martial piece of extremely dark experimental Doom Metal, with some atmospheres that clearly belong to the realms of Black Metal. This song has an interesting monotony, increased by the martial drumming, which makes of this song, one of my favourites. “Désespoir Suicidaire” of LIFE’S DECAY continues the path of destruction left by Plutonium; this band condenses the blurry atmospheres of Drone (created by the inhuman and morbid guitar “melodies”) mixes those with the obscure ambiances of Doom Metal and the severity of Black/Death Metal, there are some keyboards here adding a funeral ambiance to the whole apocalyptic panorama… just fucking great!!. Then, PARTNERS IN CRIME comes with “An Harmonious World” a heavy piece of Sludge Metal with droning guitar riffs creating a narcotic aura of desolation… the vocals here are disturbed screams adding an interesting morbid touch… all this surrounded by a dark and pretty chaotic atmosphere… this song reaches the eight minutes of morbid geniality. The following song is, undoubtedly, the most bizarre track of this compilation; HORION with “La Schlague” delivers an ultra insane piece of Techno/Industrial madness… it sound cloud be labelled somewhere between a “drum & bass from hell” and the intense density of Aborym’s “With No Human Intervention”… this song sound as peacefully as an O.D… absolutely recommendable track. EQUILIBRIUM is the responsible of the ninth track, “The Prophet”, this band plays a narcotic blend of Sludge Metal, Industrial and extreme Doom Metal, with electric sludgy riffing and the velocity, density and intensity of Doom Metal. The music of Equilibrium is really blurry and crawling, including the vocals that are distorted and hatefully screams, there’s some interesting monotone, funeral atmosphere along this song making of this 6 minutes lasting song a great piece of unmerciful torture to your ears... fucking great! SOY BOMB contributes with “The Doom Bringer”, probably the slowest piece of Doom Metal I ever heard, with great funeral guitar riffs an almost static drum work and no voices at all… an estrange musical experience… The penultimate song “Voluntary Extinction” belongs to PHILISTINE this band delivers an aggressive, mid paced Industrial Doom Metal, with great industrial/electric guitar riffs and some structures close to Death Metal, the vocals are the most aggressive element with its destructive, almost Thrash Metal like screams. This band focuses its music in the intense and bitter melodies crated by the Industrial riffs and the martial aura provided by the drumming. Closing this compilation is VERSUS THE STILLBORN-MINDED; “Climax of Delusion” is an almost nine minutes piece of Stoner/Doom Metal with grandiloquent atmospheres formed by the blurry wall of deep riffs and the rocking vocal work. As I mentioned before this work is an interesting musical compendium, especially if you are into the Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Drone, etc. but if you aren’t, this work could give you an extensive vision over the mentioned styles and a wide view to this true Underground scene… An absolutely recommendable release.
